The BBC has apologised after a reporter sent out an inaccurate tweet claiming the Queen was being "treated" in hospital which generated speculation on social media about the state of Her Majesty's health.

Coincidentally the tweet was posted on the day the corporation held a technical rehearsal for its future coverage of the Queen's obituary but the BBC stressed that tweeting was not part of the exercise.

Buckingham Palace also took the unusual step of revealing that the Queen was at hospital earlier today for her routine annual medical check-up after concerns were raised about her well-being following the tweet.
