"Hairy Biker" Si King has offered to pay for the treatment of an illegal immigrant with a suspected brain tumour who is facing deportation from the UK.

Albanian national Lorenc Hoxha was arrested on suspicion of immigration offences at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary - the same hospital where King was treated for a brain aneurysm last year.

The 47-year-old presenter, who is from Durham, said that he would "willingly" pay for the 27-year-old's treatment.

"Of course I would," he told BBC's Look North. "It's about humanity. It's not about a political point."

Hospital staff called police on June 2 after doctors decided that Hoxha did not require urgent treatment.

A spokeswoman for the RVI said that a "medical decision was made" that "the patient was fit for travel and discharge to seek treatment in his own country."

Police were called after several of Mr Hoxha's friends said they could not take responsibility for him," the spokeswoman said.

"The group were aware that if none of them were prepared to take him home to their houses then the Trust would have to call the police," she said.

It is understood that Mr Hoxha had been deported in 2011 and has previously sought treatment in Greece - but no operation had taken place.

Northumbria Police said that a 27-year-old man had been arrested at the hospital on June 2 on behalf of immigration services and has since been released into the custody of immigration officers.
