More than 50 dog surfers of all breeds and sizes joined an annual dog surfing competition in California

The canines at this year's event participated in heats based on their weight, with extra-large, large, medium and small categories as well as a tandem division.

Really, she does it it's all her, you saw her balancing on board, turning 360s, 180s.

I didn't teach her that, that's the dog I taught her how to balance in a kitty pool when she was eight- months old on a boogie board, the rest of it is Kalani. She is just a fantastic balancing dog

– Sandra Lew from San Diego, with her large Dog First Place winner Kalani.

They were judged on their skills, the duration of the ride and their confidence while riding by a panel of professional surf judges, local media said.

I started out swimming and Abbie would follow me out.

That is more of a swimming thing but while we were out there we tried putting her on the board and she just rode it in so we kind of just got wrapped up in all this craziness

– Michael Uy from San Diego, whose dog Abbie won the first place in medium dogs' category.

The owners of the winning dogs shared their experiences of training and handling the champions.
