A mother who shared a picture of her baby boy's orange face after she breastfed him shortly after a spray tan has been bombarded with online abuse.

Gemma Colley shared a picture of her "epic fail" after she discovered that her fake tan had rubbed on to her son's face when she was breastfeeding - giving him a 'five o'clock shadow'.

She shared it on the Unmumsy Mum Facebook page with the comment: "From one mum to another, I’d like to let you know about my epic fail of fails. Yesterday I had a spray tan, a few hours later I breastfed my little boy. Cue 5 o’clock shadow and a very guilty mummy."

By the end of that day, her post had been shared more than 100,000 times and had attracted plenty of positive comments from mothers who had experienced similar mishaps.

But it also attracted online abuse, with trolls telling her she "shouldn't be allowed to be a parent" and claiming she had "intentionally poisoned" her son.

She was also called "a f***ing whore" and the "world's worst mum".

Ms Colley has hit back at her critics in a powerful blog post entitled 'Nobody's Perfect'.

"I occasionally forget things, lose my sh*t, give my eldest (two and a half) one too many biscuits, and occasionally let the CBeebies presenters babysit, but I’d hardly say that constitutes as the worst mum in the world," she wrote.

"lf the worst thing I can do is give my baby an unintentional 5 o’clock shadow, I don’t think I’ve done too bad."

Her response to the "keyboard warriors" was widely praised, with one mother telling her to "ignore the idiots who can’t see the funny side".

Others said her honesty had helped them cope with the pressures of being a first-time mother.

Loved this post! As a new mum I panic if I’m doing things right but seeing blogs like yours I know I’m not alone!

Well done for standing up to these (Perfect mums)? I am a mum of four, and now a nanny to eight,I still get things wrong.

For the ones who said I was selfish for having a spray tan, well god forbid a mum should take a bit of time out for herself. I forgot I should have them both attached by umbilical cord until they reach their 18th birthdays. I love spending time with my boys, but occasionally I need a break, not a crime. One of the recent ‘breaks’ I took was when I jet washed the patio whilst my husband entertained the kids in the garden. Ah pure bliss. Let’s face it when the kids aren’t attached, it’s an opportunity to deal with the pile of dust building on the TV, clean the layers of porridge off the baby’s high chair, and get any general jobs done whilst you have two arms free. So yes, I’m sorry I took 20 minutes out to get a spray tan so I wouldn’t look like a washed out banana in the bright yellow dress I’d bought for a wedding. In regards to the trolls/keyboard warriors. All I can say to you is ‘get a life!’, if the only thing you get kicks from is writing abusive messages to people you know nothing about, then wow I really think you need to take a long hard look in the mirror.
