Passengers left stunned by crabs on the metro

Passengers were left stunned when several dozen crabs were spotted crawling off a train at Gateshead Metro Station on Thursday night.

It is thought that a fisherman was heading home after catching the crabs on the coast. His carrier bag then split causing the unusual infestation. He swiftly left the station, leaving staff to resolve the problem.

A spokesman for the Metro train system said the crabs that survived the ordeal had been taken to a marine wildlife centre:

This wasn't an everyday occurrence and our staff acted quickly to remove the crabs from the train and platform.

They have been taken to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth.
