A seven-year-old boy and his mother have been shot on their own doorstep in Salford, in what police have called a "sickening and cowardly" attack they believe is linked to the murder of "Mr Big" security boss Paul Massey.
The boy sustained life-changing injuries after being shot once in the leg, while his mother, who has been named locally as Jayne Hickey, was shot twice, also in the leg.
Both were taken to hospital after the attack in Gillingham Road.
Convicted criminal Massey, 55, was found dead with gunshot wounds outside his home in Salford in July.
There have been a spate of shootings in the Salford and Bolton areas over the weekend.
On Saturday afternoon a man was shot in the stomach in Bolton and later that night a house in the town and another in Salford were fired at.
