A dozen people helped lift a car trapping an 11-year-old boy who was suffering "life-threatening" injuries after a collision.

The unidentified boy, who is in a critical condition in hospital, was hit by an Iveco Daily van and an Audi A4 Quattro on Tuesday night in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire.

A spokesperson for East Midlands Ambulance Service said paramedics could not initially treat the boy as he was trapped under a car.

They (paramedics) have asked us to pass on their thanks to around 12 onlookers who physically lifted the car off the casualty because their actions saved valuable minutes and allowed crews to provide life-saving clinical care.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre with "critical" injuries, Nottinghamshire police said.

They are appealing for witnesses to the collision, which took place on Nabbs Lane, at the junction with Godber Road at around 7pm, to come forward.
