An investigation has been launched after a red squirrel was shot dead in a field.

The animal's body was found near Lockerbie in Scotland on September 21.

A man was seen cycling in the area and it is believed he may have been carrying an air rifle.

A male suspect was seen in the area cycling with what is believed to have been an air rifle or similar in a gun slip worn over his back.

He is described as being of stocky build and was wearing a camouflage hat and jacket.

A post-mortem of the squirrel confirmed it had been shot and we are investigating this incident with Police Scotland.

Red squirrels are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is an offence to intentionally or recklessly kill or injure these animals.
