A McDonald's worker who pretended to give a homeless man a burger and then threw water over him has been sacked after a clip of the cruel prank went viral.

In the footage, which has been viewed more than 800,000 times, the staff member is heard shouting: "Hey Willy, come here. Do you want a sandwich?"

Waving a burger out the drive-thru window, he pretends he is going to give it to the man.

But when he steps forward to the booth, the worker is seen throwing a cup of water over him.

The person filming starts laughing as the homeless man says: "Why'd you do that?"

McDonald's confirmed the unnamed employee had since been sacked.

In a statement, Franchisee Wise Finley said:

I am very disturbed by the inappropriate behavior of this employee. It is not tolerated in my organisation.

I expect my employees to treat everyone with dignity and respect, and this was unacceptable. This individual no longer works for my organisation.
