Zayn Malik has revealed that he never wanted to be in One Direction and was looking to leave the band from the first year.
"I always wanted to go from the first year - I never really wanted to be there," the 23-year-old said in his first broadcast interview since leaving the band last March.
Malik said he "instantly realised" being a part of 1D was not for him when he saw what direction the music was going in, adding that he was "frustrated" at being unable to have any influence over the style.
Asked if his bandmates were aware of how unhappy he was, the Bradford-born singer said: "I think the boys kind of knew, in terms of the music, that it wasn't my cup of tea.
"They were trying to facilitate certain things for me, like singing certain RnB, and that was nice but I think they always knew."
He said no member attempted to talk him out of leaving.
"They obviously didn't want me to leave but they couldn't talk me out of it at that point, I'd already made my mind up."
The full interview can be heard on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show on Apple Music tonight at 5pm
