A man suspected of murdering a couple at their bungalow in Chidham, West Sussex, has died in hospital.

Police wanted to question Norman Williams over the deaths of his sister-in-law Sheila Jefferson, 73, and her 76-year-old husband Dennis who were found dead in their burnt-out home on Saturday.

Detectives believe they were attacked in their home in Maybush Drive before it was set alight.

Williams turned up at a property about 60 miles away in Rotherfield on Saturday lunch-time with severe burns before being transferred to hospital.

However, he died on Tuesday, a Sussex Police spokesman said.

The information we have so far had led us to treat Norman as the suspect in our investigation.

He has since passed away in hospital. We do not have any information that there is anyone else involved. This is a tragic incident and the families of all those involved have asked for privacy and time to grieve at this time."

– Detective Chief Inspector Tanya Jones

Local people reportedly described the Jeffersons as "the kindest people out there".

Detectives renewed their appeal for anyone who saw anything suspicious in Maybush Drive between 9am last Friday and 8.35am on Saturday when the fire was started.
