Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump says the US should keep Guantanamo Bay detention centre open in Cuba and “load it up” with some “bad dudes”.

He was responding to President Barack Obama’s proposals to close the highly controversial prison “once and for all”, which he outlined to Congress today.

Mr Obama said he was making one last effort to close the centre, and that following its closure the remaining detainees there would be transferred to the US.

But Donald Trump denied that this would happen, suggesting the Cuban government take over Guantanamo Bay, and reimburse the US for “paying rent”.

This morning I watched President Obama talking about Gitmo, Guantanamo Bay - which by the way we are keeping open and we're going to load it up with some bad dudes, believe me, we're going to load it up.

He also said he could keep the detention centre open and run it for a "tiny fraction" of the current cost.
