The former producer of Only Fools and Horses, Gareth Gwenlan, has died.

Mr Gwenlan, 79, was Head of Comedy from 1983-1990 and produced a string of hit shows including Blackadder, One Foot in the Grave, 'Allo 'Allo, Yes Prime Minister, Keeping up Appearances and Birds of a Feather.

Quite simply one of Britain's finest comedy producers. He was a pioneer, a perfectionist.

What finer legacy than to know you brought happiness to millions.

Mr Gwenlan won 12 Bafta nominations, two Academy Awards and was awarded a Royal Television Fellowship in 1997 and an OBE in 2013.

Under his stewardship, BBC Comedy won a Bafta every year he was in charge as well as three Emmys.

Among those paying tribute were actress Sue Holderness, best known for her role as Marlene Boyce in Only Fools and Horses.
