Prince Philip and the Queen returned to London from Aberdeen today after the Duke of Edinburgh was forced to pull out of the Battle of Jutland memorial event in Orkney due to ill health.

Prince Philip and the Queen spent the weekend at Balmoral Castle, with Princess Anne representing the royal family at the memorial service.

David Cameron, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and German President Joachim Gauck joined joined descendants of those who fought in the Battle of Jutland to remember the thousands who died in the largest naval battle of the First World War.

A British cadet lit a candle in a sign of hope as diary entries of those who served on both sides were read out at the service at St Magnus Cathedral.
