The government has warned there is a high threat of possible terror attacks in South Africa.

A foreign travel advice statement said the attacks could be indiscriminate with tourists potentially targeted in shopping areas.

The warning comes just days after a similar warning was issued by the United States embassy in Pretoria about the threat of "near-term attacks" in areas where US citizens congregate.
