A teenager has died after getting into difficulty while swimming below a waterfall, police have said.
The 16-year-old boy was swimming in the pool below High Force waterfall in Forest-in-Teesdale when he got into difficulty.
The alarm was raised at 8pm on Tuesday, and police, fire crews, and mountain rescue services attended to search the river.
He was located at around 9.45pm and airlifted to James Cook hospital in Middlesbrough where he later died.
Five other teenagers who had been with the boy were not injured.
