Johnny Depp and Amber Heard due in court over domestic violence claims

A judge will consider claims of domestic violence made against Johnny Depp by his estranged wife Amber Heard on Friday, as the pair continue their high-profile divorce battle.

The 53-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star was issued with a temporary restraining order in May following allegations that he abused Heard, who said she "lives in fear" of her husband.

According to papers filed by Heard with the Los Angeles Superior County Court, Depp had a "history of drug and alcohol abuse" and had been abusive for all of their four-year relationship.

It is not clear whether the former couple will appear together at the hearing, although they are both expected to attend.

The hearing will deal with the issue of the restraining order after Heard dropped a request for spousal support.

The 30-year-old actress submitted photos to court last month which appear to show her bruised face - she alleges this was a result of Depp throwing a phone at her.

Depp's lawyer Laura Wasser said in court documents relating to the restraining order that the actress was "attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse."
