Body found in search for mother-of-three feared to have drowned

A body has been found by police looking for a mother-of-three feared to have drowned while playing in a river with her children.

The woman, thought to be in her 30s, had been missing for more than 14 hours after getting into difficulty.

Divers had been searching the River Great Ouse in Bedford and on Friday a woman's body was found.

A neighbour said there were screams of "I can't swim" before police and a helicopter arrived.

Police said it is believed the woman entered the water to help someone else who was in distress and then got into difficulties herself

Emergency services were called to the area at around 8pm on Thursday, with the fire service and a police helicopter helping with the search.

Neighbour Joe Vacchio said the woman had been diving into the water off small islands with her three children.

Mr Vacchio said: "There were screams that my wife heard of 'I can't swim'. She hasn't been seen since."

After police arrived Mr Vacchio said he saw the three children sitting by the river wrapped in towels.

He added: "I have lived here 20 years and I've never been in that river. It's very, very dangerous and very, very unpredictable."
