'Dungeon' sex attacker finally caught after 33 years

A man who kidnapped a 15-year-old girl and subjected her to a brutal sexual assault in a "dungeon" has finally been caught and jailed more than 30 years after the attack.

David Green, 60, snatched his young victim from theseafront in Weston-super-Mare in July 1983 and dragged her to a "filthy, dank and dark" store room where he bound her wrists and assaulted her for at least an hour.

The teenager had her wrists and mouth covered with tape in an assault so traumatic that she believed she would die and which has haunted her ever since.

Detectives were unable to identify the attacker at the time but advancements in DNA testing provided a breakthrough when they carried out a cold case review in 2015.

When he was arrested Green was found to have a tattoo reading Dave on his arm - matching the original description given by his victim.

He has now been jailed for nine years after admitting charges of kidnap, sexual assault and false imprisonment.

Judge Martin Picton said the passage of time had "done nothing to diminish the impact" on the victim and her family at the sentencing at Bristol Crown Court.

Green said "I'm sorry" as he was led away to begin his sentence.

The court heard that Green had approached his victim as she walked to work at a nearby hotel before overpowering her and dragging her away.

The teenager escaped when Green left the storeroom at least an hour later.

Detectives carried out fresh DNA analysis on the clothes she had been wearing at the time of the attack when they reviewed the case.

It brought up a partial match on the police national database with Green, who had a string of previous convictions for sexual offences dating from 1975 to 2002.

Speaking outside court, Detective Constable Scott Westbrook-Smith said his conviction should send a "powerful message" to anyone who has not yet been caught for a sexual assault.

The force is continuing to review about 39 unsolved rape cases and 29 unsolved murders.
