A woman has given birth to her first child at the age of 61.

Italian Maria Rosaria Veneruso gave birth to a healthy boy on Monday afternoon after a "normal and peaceful" pregnancy.

Ms Veneruso and her husband Enzo were delighted with their new arrival, who they named Elia Francesco.

Their bundle of joy weighed 3.5 kilograms (7lb 7oz).

Ms Veneruso claimed she didn't have reproductive treatment, but the sexagenarian is not the oldest woman to give birth naturally.

The record is still held by an unidentified English woman in 1887. According to the Lancet Medical Journal, the woman had triplets at 62-and-a-half years old. The boys were her 11th, 12th, and 13th children.

Earlier this year, 70-year-old Mohinder Singh Gill from India became the oldest woman to give birth after she had a baby with her 79-year-old husband through IVF treatment.
