Passengers on a plane were forced to evacuate onto the runway after the aircraft burst into flames in a busy Chicago airport.

The American Airlines plane prompted a major emergency response at O'Hare International Airport, authorities said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said initially that no one was hurt during the incident, but later said minor injuries were reported.

American Airlines said in a statement that seven passengers and one crew member were taken to the hospital for evaluation after suffering minor injuries.

The airline confirmed that there were 161 passengers and 9 crew members on board.
