Anger as Walkers increases price of crisps by 10% following post-Brexit slump in the pound
Walkers is increasing the price of a bag of crisps by up to 10 per cent - with the slump in the pound following the Brexit vote to blame, the firm has said.
The standard 32g bag will rise from 50p to 55p, while the 'grab bags' will go from 75p to 80p.
A statement from the company said "fluctuating foreign exchange rates" had prompted bosses to make "selective cost price changes across our portfolio".
The new prices will apply to retailers buying in the crisps to sell on, the statement added - meaning stores will then have to decide how much to charge customers.
The announcement sparked anger from customers online, accusing the company of being "greedy" and calling for a boycott.
However, the firm denied it was using Brexit as an "excuse" to hike prices.
While the crisps are made from British potatoes, the company said other items - including frying oil, seasoning, and packaging materials - were all imported.
It comes just weeks after a number of household brands such as Marmite, Pot Noodle and Impulse were pulled from the shelves in Tesco stores due to a pricing row with goods manufacturer Unilever.
