Women's top seed Angelique Kerber struggled to a 6-4, 6-4 win on Centre Court in her first round match against qualifier Irina Falconi.

Last year's beaten finalist wasn't at her best but still managed to find a way past her opponent who is ranked 103 in the world.

The American put up a spirited display against Kerber but was unable to punce on oppurtunities that came her way as the German progresses to round two.

Kerber will now face either Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens or Japan's Misaki Doi in the next round.
