Steve Smith led the Australia recovery after England's bowlers had made a fine start to the Ashes series.

The hosts stumbled to 84 for four shortly after tea on day two at the Gabba, with David Warner among the early flurry of wickets, but they battled back to 128 without further loss during the evening session.

Australia skipper Smith scored his side's first half-century of the series, while Shaun Marsh survived a review for lbw facing Stuart Broad to contribute to an unbeaten 50 partnership.

England earlier were bowled out for 302 after losing their last six wickets for 56 runs, with Dawid Malan scoring a half-century, but Stuart Broad removed opener Cameron Bancroft in the fourth over before the dangerous Warner (26) whipped a catch to midwicket off Jake Ball.
