Diana, Princess of Wales would have been so proud of her “wonderful” daughters-in-law the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge, the Duchess of York has said.
Sarah, the Duke of York’s ex-wife and a friend of the late princess who was killed in a car crash in 1997, said Diana would have wanted to hug Meghan and Kate and tell them: “You’re doing well.”
The duchess, who was interviewed on ITV’s Good Morning Britain to highlight her Street Child charity appeal, added that Diana’s sons William and Harry are a credit to her.
Sarah said: “She’d really just be so proud. Even before they got married, Diana would have been just literally going ‘I can’t believe these boys have done so well’.
“They are such a credit to her.
“She had this enormous compassion and I honestly think she’d be so proud of the wonderful Meghan and Catherine as well, she’d want to embrace them and say ‘You’re doing well’.”
The duchess also told how she felt “the old Fergie was back” when she was invited to Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May.
But she admitted it was a nerve-wracking appearance.
Sarah, who was not a guest at William and Kate’s nuptials in 2011, said of the Sussexes: “I felt very honoured and grateful for Harry and Meghan to invite me. That is a big, big point… It was very kind of them and I can’t thank them enough for doing that.
“It was nerve-wracking and I was glad I didn’t trip over with those high heel shoes on.”
On hearing the crowds cheer for her at the wedding, she added, “It was quite extraordinary. I look around and thought ‘Are they doing it for me?’ and then some went ‘Fergie’… and it was the old Fergie back and I felt that sense of support from the crowds.”
The duchess, whose maiden name was Ferguson, was cast out from the Windsors amid her “toe sucking” scandal in the 1990s.
Sarah also paid tribute to the Queen for supporting her and including her in Harry’s wedding.
“Her Majesty knew me from when I was a little naughty aged 10… I can’t thank Her Majesty enough for being so steadfast to me.”
The duchess recounted the wedding of her own daughter Princess Eugenie in October.
An exuberant Sarah had her hat compared to a Golden Snitch, hugged a guest in a wheelchair in the crowd, and afterwards fist-pumped the air on the steps of St George’s Chapel.
She told GMB hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: “There’s always something I do… Everyone said ‘Go into the church and be demure. Don’t go over the top.’
“But you can’t. I went nuts… The lady in the wheelchair was mum’s best friend.”
Speaking about her relationship with her former husband Andrew, with whom she still shares a home, the duchess said: “What I love about that is that I am different and he’s different.”
But when Morgan asked: “A potential re-marriage?”, Sarah raised her hands and exclaimed: “Piers, get a life!”
