Police in Devon are investigating following the arrest of a driver who claimed he swerved to "avoid an octopus" on the road.

Officers made the arrest on Tuesday following reports of an accident on the A381 between Malborough and South Milton. Upon arriving at the scene they found the vehicle upside-down in a ditch.

Inquiries were made but the octopus remains illusive, officers said there is no evidence one had been in the road.

Officers responsible for the Kingsbridge area of Devon and Cornwall Police tweeted that the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs or drink. He has since been released as officers investigate.

A spokesperson for the force said: “He did a bit of a slow roll into a ditch. An ambulance went out and the driver was checked over by paramedics but there weren’t injuries enough to go to hospital.”

On Twitter, users were quick to comment on the situation. One mocked that the driver will face "the long arm of the law," following the incident, another adding it is good that police are "kraken down drug driving."
