Newly created crash cushions are being installed alongside the A14 in Cambridgeshire in a bid to protect workers widening the road.

They've been created to reduce the impact of any crashes near roadworks. It's part of a safety drive by the Highways Agency.

Between 2009 and 2013, eight road workers died and 317 were injured while working on or near motorways and major A roads in England

The Highways Agency has issued advice for driving safely through roadworks:

  • Keep within the speed limit, it is there for your safety

  • Get into the correct lane in good time, don't keep switching

  • Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks

  • Be alert for works traffic leaving or entering roadworks

  • Keep a safe distance, there could be queues in front

  • Observe all signs, they are there to help you
