Set in the south-east corner of Hertfordshire, bordering Essex, the constituency is named after the towns of Hertford and Bishop's Stortford. The other main towns are Ware and Sawbridgeworth.

The constituency is affluent, having considerably more professional and managerial workers than the national average.

The major sources of employment for people living in the constituency are found in London. But the pharmaceutical industry is also an important provider of jobs locally.

  • Conservative majority in 2010: 15,437

Former minister Mark Prisk has been the Conservative MP for Hertford and Stortford since 2001.

The seat was created in 1983 and has been held by the Conservatives since then.
