Baby elephant given ‘birthday cake’ to celebrate first birthday

A baby Asian elephant at Whipsnade Zoo presented with a very special treat to celebrate his first birthday.

The elephant, called Sam, was given a giant ‘birthday cake’ made of hay topped with his favourite treat of bananas. It sat in a paper cake case and pink cake box.

“It’s wonderful that we have extra cause to celebrate at this year’s Elephantastic event, because Sam has been with us for a whole year now, and he’s a really wonderful addition to the herd. The hay cake will no doubt be devoured by the older elephants, but I think like many toddlers, Sam will be more entertained by the colourful box it comes in!

“Asian elephants are an endangered species so we’re proud of our breeding programme here, with nine elephants born over the years at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, as part of the European Endangered Species Programme.

“Sam is a real visitor favourite, but he’s also so important to the other members of the herd, who all look after him in an incredible way. Hopefully lots of people will come and help us celebrate his birthday at Elephantastic this weekend and in doing so, support his relatives in the wild.”
