The author of hit TV crime series Grantchester has revealed that he is too scared to go out on his own after he was attacked outside a cathedral in Cambridgeshire last year.

James Runcie suffered head and eye injuries after the unprovoked assault in Ely.

In a statement read at Cambridge Magistrates' Court, on Tuesday (26/1) he said:

"I feel frightened and have lost my confidence. I can not go out on my own now and this is a real problem.

Part of my work is visiting places to research my books. I will no longer be able to be as trusting as I once was."

Mr Runcie was left covered in blood after being punched and kicked to the ground by a man who claims to have heard voices in his head.

A 31-year-old local man, Todd Germeney, was sentenced to 24 weeks in custody.
