Thousands of swimmers have taken to the waters in Suffolk for the Great East Swim

Two thousand people squeezed into wetsuits, donned goggles and took the plunge at the Great East Swim in Alton Water, near Ipswich, today. Including a team from ITV Anglia who challenged a team from BBC Look East to a race.

Swimmers, young and old, chose to swim either half a mile, a mile, two miles or 10 kilometres. And there was a special race for children too.

"After the Beijing Olympics, there were lots of medallists around but nothing really for the public or for the masses. So we've worked very hard with Suffolk County Council in trying to get their message of most active county, getting people involved across all the different distances. People don't just want to be in the chlorine, in lanes of swimming pools. They want to be in fabulous locations like Alton Water."

Most people were raising money for well known charities. And as for the ITV and BBC race - we'll have to wait to confirm our times to know who won!
