Commemorations have been taking place across the region to mark the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

The battle turned out to be the bloodiest day in British military history, with 60,000 soldiers killed on the first day alone.

Across the East, people have been turning out in their droves to remember the brave soldiers who gave up their lives on that fateful day a century ago.
