Essex Police have arrested 17 people on suspicion of aggravated trespass following a protest which grounded all flights at Stansted.

At around 9:30pm on Tuesday 28 March campaigners from ‘Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants’ were joined by activists from ‘Plane Stupid’ to chain themselves together to protest deportation 'charter flights'.

The groups say they are racist and target people based on the colour of their skin and their nationality. They locked themselves to a plane near a non-commercial runway.

One of the protesters at the scene, Emma Hughes from End Deportations, said the protest was an "unprecedented victory in the fight against mass deportations"

In all 23 inbound flights had to be diverted to other airports as a result of the closure.

The plane eventually left Stansted Airport at midnight, before the protestors were arrested.

It is still unclear how the protestors gained access to the site.
