Northampton Saints endured a nightmare start to the new Aviva Premiership season after they were thrashed by European champions Saracens at Twickenham.

The Saints were no match for their opponents, and let in seven first-half tries to go in at the break 41-3 down.

Scottish wing Sean Maitland was their chief tormentor, helping himself to a hat-trick in the opening 40 minutes, while Brad Barritt, Richard Wigglesworth, Alex Lozowski and Vincent Koch also crossed the line as the Saints shipped the most points they've ever conceded in a half of Premiership rugby.

The Saints did raise their game after the break, with Tom Wood going over twice and fellow back row Lewis Ludham also touching down, but the damage had already been done.

Schalk Brits and Ben Spencer further compounded the Saints' misery on a poor afternoon for Jim Mallinder's side who will need to drastically improve for next Saturday's big derby against Leicester Tigers at Franklin's Garden.
