Thirteen monkeys die in fire at Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire

Thirteen monkeys have died following a fire at Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire.

The fire broke out just after 2.30am (2 January), in the Patas Monkey house within the African Forest drive-through enclosure of the park.

Fire crews arrived to find the outbuilding housing Patas monkeys was well alight and its roof had fallen in.

The building was almost completely damaged by the fire, which was spotted by security guards on a routine patrol.

In a statement the park said: "Staff and fire crews attended the scene;however, devastatingly for everyone at the park, none of the 13 animals could be saved."

All other animals within the jungle drive-through enclosure are beingmonitored, but early signs suggest they have not been affected.

An investigation found fire most likely started accidentally in a generator.

The park remains open, but the jungle enclosure will be closed to visitors.
