A volunteer in King's Lynn has been honoured with a title that hasn't been bestowed for hundreds of years.

Barry Howard has been showing visitors around the 15th century gatehouse for 10 years.

But now the 78-year-old has become the new 'Custodian of the South Gate - and Keeper of the Muckhill'.

"I'm exceptionally pleased that they did it, although why they would pick me I have no idea. I will do my best to show people the history of King's Lynn, which is one of my interests."

Barry Howard was appointed to the role of Custodian of the South Gate and Keeper of the Muckhill by West Norfolk Mayor Carol Bower.

In years gone by, his role would have involved keeping the gates of King’s Lynn locked at night and the unenviable job of tending to the muckheaps.

But the keeper's tasks will be very different today; Barry's main responsibility will be showing off King's Lynn's heritage to visitors.
