Thousands of people have signed a petition to officially recognise a Bedford "institution".

Lina Ognissanti is known as "The Dinky Donut Lady". She has been selling sweet treats on the same spot in the town centre for more than 40 years.

An online petition for her to get an award has got more than 2,500 signatures.

"Growing up, people that have been here all their lives, people that have moved out of Bedford - I think everyone will remember her, because, she's really lovely, caring and she just gets along with everyone.

"She's been in the same spot for all of these years, her hard work will not go unnoticed."

– Sarkab Mahmood, Petition organiser:

The long-term trader has thanked the people of Bedford for their support.

She started selling ice cream in the 1970s and later added dinky donuts, because fewer people bought ice creams in the winter.

The Mayor of Bedford is now looking into celebrating Lina's contribution.
