Should mobile phones be banned in schools?

The Culture Secretary and West Suffolk MP Matt Hancock wants mobile phones confiscated from pupils at the school gate. He says they are a distraction and barrier to learning.

One school in his constituency - the Samuel Ward Academy in Haverhill - has banned them on campus for more than a decade.

Pupils are encouraged to have a phone with them going to and from school to keep safe but it must be switched off when on school premises.

Staff at the Samuel Ward Academy say not having access to mobile phones helps children study and socialise better.
