A new study has revealed that drivers picking up family and friends from airports in our region pay more than anywhere else in the country.
The research from the RAC found that London Luton Airport is comfortably the most expensive airport in the UK to park, with drivers paying £8 for just 30 minutes' parking at car parks close to the terminal.
Motorists collecting passengers from Stansted Airport are also being charged big fees - with some having to fork out £5.50 to park for up to half an hour.
Both Luton and Stansted have raised their prices by £1 and 50p respectively in the past year.
"With thousands of motorists driving to airports to pick up and drop off friends and family members, many will unfortunately find themselves shocked by some of the extortionate parking tariffs operated by some airports," RAC spokesman Rod Dennis said.
"Our advice is to check parking fees and time limits well before setting out for an airport this summer so as to avoid a nasty shock.
"Drivers should also be aware of just how high some charges can be if they inadvertently stay longer picking up or dropping off than they originally meant to."
London Luton have disputed the findings, with a spokesperson claiming that the RAC had "chosen to misrepresent facts".
The spokesman pointed out that free parking for various lengths of time is available at car parks further from the terminal building, and suggested that parking charges are set to "manage a limited number of spaces" due to the fact that the airport's short-term car park is currently closed.
