Cricket fans have voted for Essex batsman Alastair Cook to be included in England's best-ever men's Test XI.

More than 6,000 supporters took part in the survey ahead of Wednesday's first Test against India at Edgbaston, which will be the 1,000th Test match that England have played in.

Cook was picked to open the batting alongside the legendary Sir Leonard Hutton, while there were also places for fellow current England stars Joe Root and Jimmy Anderson.

“To be selected in the best-ever England men’s Test XI side by cricket fans across the country is incredibly humbling," Root said.

“It’s great to see my current team-mates Alastair Cook and James Anderson be recognised for their contributions to England Test cricket too."
