Part of the A14 in Cambridgeshire could become a motorway.
Highways England have announced they will apply for the road to be reclassified as a motorway once current upgrade works are finished.
The 18-mile stretch would create an unbroken motorway link between London and Peterborough.
Highways England are currently halfway through a £1.5 billion pound upgrade project improving 21 miles of the road between Cambridge and Huntingdon.
The government company hope submitting the planning request now will mean it will be approved by the time the works are completed in 2020
