Northamptonshire Police is to phase out gender neutral baseball caps from its uniform because they do not "portray the right image".

The reinforced 'bump caps' were introduced last May to replace traditional helmets in a bid to offer better protection, equip them for 21st century policing and attract more transgender officers.

But Nick Adderley, who became the Chief Constable in August, said "for many officers not every occasion warrants wearing a bump cap".

The Chief Constable also said that police officers will no longer wear fluorescent yellow vests and will return to wearing black tactical vests, with hi-vis issued as necessary.
