For the animals at rescue centres like the Wood Green shelter near Huntingdon, the festive period has been spent waiting for someone to give them a new home.

Staff also have to come in throughout Christmas and the New Year to care for them.

But they try to inject a bit of seasonal fun into the abandoned animals' stay at the shelter.

It's not just unwanted dogs that they care for at Wood Green. They take in chickens from battery farms to find them new homes.

They even have an albino ferret and there are also lots of cats needing new owners.

On their Christmas tree in reception they have pictures of some of the abandoned pets who've spent the longest time at the shelter.

Still waiting for the gift of a new home and family.
