The Mayor of Cambridge has died while on a diving holiday in South Africa.
Councillor Nigel Gawthrope, 61, was on holiday with his wife when he died on Friday lunchtime following a dive off the coast of Durban.
The exact cause of his death hasn't been confirmed yet.
Councillor Gawthrope was an experienced SCUBA diver and underwater photographer.
He was elected as Cambridge's Mayor in May 2018 after first becoming a Labour councillor in the city in 2012.
“Losing Nigel is a massive shock and hurts us all at the City Council, particularly his closest colleagues, and that is nothing compared to the devastation that his close and loving family are feeling right now," City Council leader Lewis Herbert said.
"I have talked to Jenny, his wife and our Mayoress, and passed on our condolences and deepest sympathies, and we are so glad that Nigel’s brother is flying out on Monday to support her when she most needs it."
The city's MP Daneil Zeichner was among those to pay tribute to him on social media.
