An entire Bedfordshire village was left without gas last night after a mains pipe was damaged by workmen at a nearby building site.

More than 800 properties in Wilstead, just South of Bedford, were left with no hot water and no heating on one of the coldest nights of the year so far.

The incident at the building site happened just after 1pm on Thursday.

Gas engineers from the gas company 'Cadent' worked through the night to try and resolve the issue and gas is now returning to the network.

"A third party has damaged the gas main about two and half kilometres away from Wilstead and that's interrupted the gas supplies," Chris Rison from Cadent told ITV News Anglia.

"We realise that during a cold snap this is really inconvenient.

"We're really thankful for the patience and understanding that this community has shown. We've been working around the clock because we know that people are cold."
