Thunderbirds mania took over Mersea Island this weekend as hundreds of sci-fi fans got up close to some of the cult show's original puppets.

The event was fundraising for the West Mersea RNLI and to celebrate 50 years of the TV classic- and gave fans the chance to chat to some of the makers of the now iconic puppets.

"I remember as a kid when they created it and I remember them writing the scripts and my mother coming up with the concept. And my father going to NASA and doing all the research and it was very exciting, even then. I don't think they had a clue it would still be around 50 years later."
