Police are investigating after a dog was stolen during a family fun day at an animal shelter on the Essex/Hertfordshire border.

Buttercup, a four-year-old pug was taken from her kennel during the fundraiser at 'Mutts in Distress' in Little Hallingbury on Sunday, May 26.

Officers say they are keen to hear from anybody who saw Buttercup being taken or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area that day.

“The theft of any beloved pet from the family home, or in this case from a boarding kennel, is always extremely distressing. Pets are an integral and loved part of their family home. For them to be snatched away by callous thieves in these circumstances is both extremely cruel and wicked."

– PC James Hicks, Essex Police

Police are also asking vets to be vigilant. Buttercup is listed on the Microchip service PETPLUS and has been marked as stolen.
