Lead stripped from Cambridgeshire church roof

Thieves have completely stripped the lead from a church roof in Cambridgeshire.

There was also substantial damage caused to the stonework of St Mary's Church in Whaddon, near Royston.

It will cost around £100,000 to repair the damage and replace the roof.

Police believe the theft occurred between 16th and 23 June.

PC Sam Thompson, from Cambridgeshire Police, said: “This is a substantial theft, which has left the church without a roof and facing a hefty repair bill.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who may have any information or who may have seen anything suspicious in the area over the weekend.”
