Northampton Saints forward Lewis Ludlam has forced his way into England's Rugby World Cup squad.

The 23-year-old, who grew up in Ipswich, only made his debut in the win over Wales on Sunday but has done enough to earn a place in Eddie Jones' 31-man travelling party.

The call-up marks a dream rise for Ludlam who attended St Joseph's College in Ipswich and played for both Ipswich and Colchester Rugby clubs before joining the Saints' academy.

His all-action displays for Northampton at flanker in the Premiership caught the eye of Head Coach Jones and he has now been rewarded with a spot on the plane to Japan for the tournament which gets underway in September.

"I can't really put into words how bizarre the last seven weeks have been really.

"This time last year I was fighting for a club contract. If you told me I'd be in this position this time last year, I'd of told you you were crazy.

"It hasn't really sunk in yet, but i'm taking each week as it comes."

Ludlam's Saints teammate Piers Francis has also made the cut after he was preferred to the more established Ben Te'o.

Centre Te'o, who was recently involved in an off-field altercation with Mike Brown during the warm-weather camp in Italy, is one of several high-profile players to be overlooked, with the likes of Saints captain Dylan Hartley also omitted.

As expected, Saints second row Courtney Lawes and Norfolk's Ben Youngs have been included though.
