A North Norfolk MP is warning the Government needs to up its game if we're to meet tough carbon emission targets.

Sir Norman Lamb says the Government needs to be more ambitious and do more to incentivise cleaner living.

Earlier this year the Government set a target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. But a new report from the Science and Technology select committee said this target will never be met without urgent action.

One of the recommendations of the report is to bring forward the ban on sales of petrol and diesel cars to 2035, and phase out personal car use.

The report says as it stands the UK is not even on track to meet its emissions targets for the next decade, let alone 2050.

There are other countries ahead of us in setting that target or even more ambitious targets and indeed some vehicle manufacturers have indicated a road map to ending the sale of conventional vehicles, so it is achievable, we need to be more ambitious.

There needs to be huge amounts of investment in public transport in cycle routes, you need to make it easier for people to get out of their cars because for a lot of people it's just not realistic... so we need to invest hugely in alternatives for people so they can get out of their cars, we can't just say to people get out of your car and find another way into work, we need to provide them with those options.
